Shadow Devil (シャドーデビル Shadō Debiru) is a Devil-type robot that appeared in Mega Man X5 as the boss of Zero Space Stage 1. It fights similarly to the original Yellow Devil, but with some dangerous differences. Its presence, including the warped Wily logo in the background of its arena, reinforces the connection between Zero and his original creator.

Strategy

Shadow Devil is one of the most difficult boss fights in Mega Man X5. All of its attacks last a long time and deal heavy damage, and it is only vulnerable for short periods of time. This makes the battle a grueling gauntlet of avoiding damage before making the most of the Shadow Devil's short vulnerability time, repeatedly.

Like Yellow Devil, Shadow Devil mainly attacks by splitting his body into blocky blobs which fly across the arena sequentially. Unlike his predecessor, however, Shadow Devil has two main differences: first is that he leaves behind a green outline, which can still deal contact damage. Second is that he has a whopping six potential blob patterns, making their movements unpredictable.

It is possible to avoid all damage from the blobs by hugging the top corner above Shadow Devil and repeatedly wall kicking. However, this can be very physically taxing considering how long the fight can take. It is also not recommended to use this strategy when Shadow Devil turns into Wily Machine 6 from Mega Man 6, as its jump can reach the player in the corner. (This strategy is more viable if X is using the Gaea Armor, however this requires passing all of the stage's green lasers without using Dark Hold, which is quite difficult).

Shadow Devil's weakpoint is its eye, which appears after every blob attack (and while in the Wily Machine form). The eye can appear in six locations around its body, five being around the "head" and one on the foot. It is weak to Tri-Thunder/E-Blade, though E-Blade is difficult to use safely. This is a throwback to the original Yellow Devil's weakness to Elec Man's Thunder Beam (which itself is nearly identical to the Tri-Thunder). Alternatively, Shadow Devil takes just as much damage from C-Flasher as E-Blade and it can be safely used from a distance.

MMX5 ShadowDevil SeparationAttack Split Attack (分離攻撃 Bunri Kōgeki)[2]
Shadow Devil melts into sixteen blobs and sequentially flies across the arena. There are six potential patterns for the blobs to follow; three patterns simply move the blobs to the other side, and three patterns have half the blobs cross before switching places with the other blobs in the middle, before finally moving to the other side.

Shadow Devil fires two projectiles at the player from its eye.

MMX5 ShadowDevil WPress W Press (Wプレス W Puresu)[2]
Shadow Devil transforms into Wily Machine 6 from Mega Man 6 and dashes along the floor until it hits a wall. It then jumps three times, attempting to crush the player, before returning to its original form. This attack is only used after Shadow Devil has lost 2/3 of its health.
Damage: 18:24:30

Archie Comics

In Worlds Unite, Shadow Devil makes a brief appearance in Mega Man #50, where it is revealed that Sigma-1 has rebuilt it alongside other Mechaniloids in his base on the Lost Hex.

Conception and creation

Early in development, Shadow Devil was originally called "Metal Devil" (メタルデビル) and was silver. Its color was later changed to black to better emphasize the lights around its eye.[1]

It being weak to Tri-Thunder/E-Blade is a reference to Yellow Devil's weakness to Thunder Beam.
